Introduction
In the deep south of France, among the green hills of Larrivière-Saint-Savin, lies a place unlike any other in the world: the Chapelle Notre Dame du Rugby (Chapel of Our Lady of Rugby). People don’t come here to pray for a victory over their rivals. Instead, players, coaches, and fans from all over the globe visit to honor the memory of lost teammates, give thanks for recovering from severe injuries, and experience the incredible spiritual brotherhood this game provides.
Unique Facts and History
The story of this remarkable place began with a profound sorrow that was transformed into a beautiful tribute. In 1964, three young and talented French rugby players tragically died in a car accident.
One Man’s Initiative: A local priest, Abbé Michel Devert, who was a passionate rugby fan himself, was so moved by this tragedy that he decided to restore a ruined 11th-century chapel and dedicate it to rugby players worldwide. It officially opened its doors in 1967.
Rugby Stained Glass: Inside the chapel, you are greeted by truly extraordinary stained glass windows. Instead of classic biblical scenes, the glass depicts rugby players jumping in a line-out, athletes packing down in a scrum, and the Virgin Mary herself watching over the game.
A Sanctuary of Jerseys: Today, the chapel’s walls are adorned with over 700 rugby jerseys. They have been left here by professional national teams (including the legendary All Blacks) and amateur clubs alike—as a mark of respect, a plea for protection on the pitch, or a memorial to fallen friends.
“In rugby, just like in life, no one makes it alone. This chapel has become a symbol of that very rugby brotherhood which doesn’t end with the referee’s final whistle.”
Exclusive to Our Collection
Special memorabilia was produced for the pilgrims and visitors of Notre Dame du Rugby, items that have become true rarities today. Our museum’s collection houses a fascinating artifact directly tied to this holy place.
It is a stunning, highly detailed medallion that replicates the chapel’s main statue. It depicts the infant Jesus holding a rugby ball in his hands, gently reaching out to the Virgin Mary. This image serves as a powerful symbol of protection for all players, both on and off the field.
Such tokens were carefully kept by athletes as cherished talismans. You can examine this touching and rare medallion in detail in our catalog by following this link: The Medal of Notre Dame du Rugby.
