Collector’s Note
Cameroon represents the vibrant, untapped potential of African rugby beyond the continent’s traditional southern strongholds. Driven by immense physical athleticism and raw grassroots passion, the sport has steadily grown despite infrastructural hurdles. The Cameroonian journey stands as a powerful testament to rugby’s universal appeal, uniting local communities and forging a new, dynamic sporting identity within the heart of West and Central Africa.
Design & Craftsmanship
Issued by Cameroon, this coin reflects the nation’s deep historical ties to France. Released to celebrate the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, this extraordinary piece defies conventional geometric minting expectations. Intricately shaped to depict the Gallic rooster—the enduring national symbol of the host country—standing proudly beside a rugby ball, it highlights an exceptional level of artistic daring and complex contouring.
The reverse features a stylized design of the Gallic rooster, France’s traditional sporting mascot, standing proudly atop a rugby ball inscribed with the word “RUGBY”. The obverse displays a right-facing portrait of King Charles III, encircled by the inscription “REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN – 2023 – 500 FRANCS CFA”.
“The rooster (‘le coq gaulois’) has long been a national symbol of France, especially in sports, and appears on many French rugby team emblems.”
