Holographic

The first officially issued rugby coin featuring a hologram.

Holographic 1999

Collector’s Note

Issued in 1999, this groundbreaking £2 piece represents a monumental leap in numismatic technology. It proudly holds a dual distinction: not only is it the first rugby-themed coin to feature a hologram, but it also marks the very first time the British Royal Mint utilized holographic security technology on a coin. This fusion of state-of-the-art optical engineering with classic minting solidifies its place as a true technological milestone.

Design & Craftsmanship

Designed by Ron Dutton, the dynamic reverse showcases a stylized rugby ball embedded with a full-color hologram that shifts and reflects light, set against a top-down view of a rugby stadium. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s classic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara.

“Reflecting and shifting color depending on the light and viewing angle, this impressive feat of 1999 minting celebrates the prestigious Rugby World Cup hosted primarily in Wales.”

A Unique Presentation

Larger and heavier than a standard £2, this 24-gram non-circulating commemorative piece is struck in .925 sterling silver and enhanced with a gold-plated outer ring. Notably, this innovative holographic edition was released as part of a wider collection, sitting proudly alongside gold, standard silver, and ordinary base-metal circulating £2 coins that share this identical historic design.

A Landmark Issue

It permanently commemorates a prestigious international tournament where Australia ultimately claimed victory, defeating France 35–12 in the final.
