Earliest

The first officially issued rugby coin.

Earliest 1991

Collector’s Note

Issued to commemorate the 1991 Rugby World Cup, this historic piece marks the inaugural appearance of rugby on an official coin. The evolution from a commemorative medal to a minted coin represents a profound shift in sports numismatics—transitioning from selective tribute to state-recognized legal tender, and cementing the sport’s global prestige.

DESIGN & CRAFTSMANSHIP

Designed by Robert Maurice Conly, the dynamic reverse features the William Webb Ellis Cup flanked by two stylized rugby players in action, alongside the “RUGBY WORLD CUP 1991” and “FIVE DOLLARS” inscriptions. The obverse showcases Raphael Maklouf’s classic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem.

“This rare First Day Cover edition perfectly captures New Zealand’s enduring role in the global rugby community and celebrates the second edition of the historic tournament.“

A UNIQUE PRESENTATION

Rather than a standard display box, this Proof-quality piece is uniquely presented in a First Day Cover format. It is accompanied by a specially postmarked, rugby-themed miniature stamp sheet dated August 21, 1991, perfectly matching the official issue date of the coin.

A LANDMARK ISSUE

As a highly restricted numbered release, this specific example is proudly marked as No. 0044/1000. By beautifully merging philately and numismatics, this 27.2-gram silver coin stands as a significant historical artifact of the 1991 Rugby World Cup, which was jointly hosted by England, Ireland, France, Scotland, and Wales.
