Collector’s Note

In France, rugby evolved from a British import into an expression of national passion and artistic flair. Strongly championed by educational institutions and civic athletic clubs, the sport quickly became ingrained in the cultural fabric, particularly in the south. The French game—celebrated for its unpredictable brilliance and intense physicality—transformed the nation into a formidable continental powerhouse and a driving force in European rugby.

About this Medal

Minted under the authority of the French Ministry of Public Instruction, this striking bronze medal captures the dynamic physicality of early 20th-century rugby. It illustrates how educational and governmental authorities actively promoted athletic competition, integrating physical education and rugby deeply into the academic framework of the Third Republic.

“Struck in bronze with a milled technique, this round award measures 50 mm in diameter, 2 mm in thickness, and weighs 40 grams with a smooth, inscribed edge stamped ‘BRONZE’.”

Design & Craftsmanship

The obverse features a dynamic, high-relief scene of a rugby tackle where a ball-carrier attempts to break through while another player lunges low, accompanied by two teammates in the background and the artist Édouard Fraisse’s signature at the lower left. The reverse displays a blank cartouche intended for engraving the winner’s name, set over crossed laurel branches and various sporting equipment including rackets, oars, and balls, surrounded by the inscription “MINISTÈRE DE L’INSTRUCTION PUBLIQUE”.
