The Ancient Heritage

Georgia 2019

Collector’s Note

For Georgia, modern rugby is less of a new frontier and more of a cultural homecoming. Channeling the fierce physicality and communal spirit of their ancient ancestral ball game, Lelo burti, the Georgian Lelos have battered their way into the highest tiers of international competition. Their remarkable rise perfectly illustrates how deep-rooted cultural heritage can seamlessly evolve into modern global sporting prowess.

Designed by Mamuka Gongadze and Nitta Gongadze.

Historical Significance & Context

Issued for the 2019 tournament, this coin bridges modern international competition with Georgia’s deep-rooted athletic heritage. By honoring both the contemporary national team’s presence on the world stage and Lelo burti—from which the Georgian rugby team derives its nickname, the Lelos—the coin captures national pride and the historical evolution of the sport.
