Collector’s Note
Bearing the 1895 inscription, this shield-shaped silver award captures the Victorian roots of club rugby in the Welsh capital. The artifact elegantly combines intricate local heraldry—featuring traditional Welsh dragons—with the classic iconography of the oval ball, illustrating how deeply community clubs anchored the sport’s early expansion.
Design & Craftsmanship
The obverse features an ornate shield-shaped silver design with decorative scrollwork, topped by a ribbon inscribed with “CARDIFF HARLEQUINS” above a central rugby ball motif. Below this, two heraldic dragons (wyverns) flank a central shield, accompanied by a banner at the bottom displaying the year “1895” and a crossing ribbon reading “FOOTBALL AND A.C.” (Athletic Club). The reverse is blank and features the maker’s mark and Birmingham Assay Office hallmarks, paired with a plain edge.
“Crafted from sterling silver (.925), this shield-shaped award measures 45 × 30 mm with a 2 mm thickness and weighs 14.4 grams.”
