A Tribute to Australian Rugby Legacy

The 2025 Royal Australian Mint Edition

In the lead-up to two major events in international rugby—the British and Irish Lions Tour and the Women’s Rugby World Cup—the Royal Australian Mint, in partnership with rebel, proudly presents new collectible coins. Released on July 17, 2025, these commemorative pieces celebrate Australia’s esteemed national teams: the Wallabies and the Wallaroos.

Honoring the Heritage

The Wallabies’ legendary status was forged when the first Australian rugby team toured the British Isles in 1908. When the English press attempted to brand them “the Rabbits,” the players rejected the name, choosing “Wallabies” as a nod to their national identity. They stormed to victory, winning 33 of their 39 matches on that tour.

Similarly, the Wallaroos name was established in 1993 for the newly formed Australian Women’s team, leading to their inaugural Test Match in 1994. In their 30th anniversary year, the elite athletes captured their first piece of silverware by winning the WXV 2 title in South Africa. The team travels to England later this year for the 10th Women’s Rugby World Cup, playing their first game against Samoa on August 23.

“Museums preserve more than objects. They preserve memories, friendships, and the stories that connect generations through the spirit of rugby.”

Design, Symbolism & Craftsmanship

Designed by the Mint’s Adam Ball, the reverse of these coins captures the spirit of the game. The center displays the team’s official kangaroo logo surrounded by the striking green and gold team colors. The dynamic features composition a stadium at the base and two athletes captured mid-play above the colored center. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne.

Looking Ahead

The Rugby Coin Museum remains committed to expanding its international collection, documenting significant discoveries, and creating new opportunities for collaboration with museums, collectors, sporting organizations, and supporters worldwide.

Future exhibitions will continue to showcase exceptional numismatic pieces while highlighting the remarkable individuals who help keep rugby’s history alive.
